SLC

Jordan High School, under the direction of Dr. Stephen Strachan, principal has embraced the principles and concepts of Small Learning Communities (SLC’s). Utilizing the Talent Development model Jordan High’s master schedule has accommodated the following smaller learning communities:

9th Grade Village

The building that houses the 9th Grade Village used to be known as the Home Economics Building. The 9th Grade Village also houses the school Psychologist, School Police and the Parent Center. The 9th Grade Villages focuses on creating comfortability for the incoming 9th graders and prepares them for upperclassmen expectations through Life Skills classes that accompany all core classes.

Health Science Academy

The Health Science Academy is in the Science Building. The Academy is committed to giving our students the opportunity to experience present-day Health Science Technology. The Health Science Academy also incorporates a youth-centered culture committed to improving student motivation, and develops personal assets for all students through the medium of caring and trusting relationships. Health Science graduates become students at colleges and universities, and ultimately leaders in the field of Health Science.

Law & Justice Academy

The Law & Justice Academy is comprised of 9 bungalows that sit to the east of the Science Building. The Academy focuses its academics and personalization on the career pathways leading to employment within the fields associated with law, with special emphasis placed on the issues surrounding social justice both locally and internationally.

STARR Academy

Sitting to the east of Jordan High’s auditorium, the STARR Academy is also comprised of 8 bungalows that sit south of what was known as the Infant Center. Jordan High’s STARR Academy is a visual and performing arts community of student learners who engage in interdisciplinary project-based learning curriculum. The Academy is organized as a production environment where students are critical members of teams that produce large-scale, high-production projects that include but are not limited to video, web-based design, drama, dance, radio productivity and more.

Magnet Program

The Magnet Program at Jordan High is well established and although it is not an academy, it is treated with academy attributes. The Magnet Program’s base is in the Administration Building but shares classes in the Science Building as well. Magnet students make up one seventh of the total student body and pride themselves with their dedication and participation is a more rigorous academic process.

All Male Academy
All Female Academy

The All Male Academy and the All Female Academy are the brainchild of Dr. Strachan and were developed to include male and female students who were more at risk than most. The goal of this small learning community is to nurture these young men and women with common classes and common teachers and provide positive role models to council, mentor and model these young men and women to a successful academic and/or career pathway.

Credit-Up Senior Program

The Credit-Up Senior Program is a successful program that affords seniors, who do met graduation requirements during their normal senior year, the opportunity to remain in school one additional year to complete their academic requirements and graduate while still enrolled at Jordan High School. Not only has this program increased the graduation rate, it has been revered and recognized by the Los Angeles Unified School district for its accomplishments.

Credit-Up Freshman Program

The Credit-Up Freshman Program is designed to provide remediation and concentration on freshmen who do met their first year’s requirements. The targeted students have double-block English and/or math classes to encourage greater success in meeting the graduation requirements.

English Language Learners
Special Education Students

Jordan High’s EL and Special Education students are enrolled in an inclusion program. EL and Special Education teachers and assistants provide assistance for students through their general education classes. Teachers and assistants are assigned to specific small learning communities where they meet the needs of all students included.
